Deepening Farm to School Connections

After twenty years of connecting farms and schools, we’re sharing this project case study to help other school communities expand the traditional farm to school model by creating a robust, year-long framework to strengthen the relationship between local farms and schools. Six farm partners and six fourth grade teachers from rural Vermont schools dedicated two years to this USDA funded effort to build meaningful and personal connections for their students and teachers between the food they eat and their community farms. Through repeated on-farm experiences, farmer-to-classroom visits, and seeing food from their local farms appear in school cafeterias, students were provided an authentic opportunity to increase agricultural literacy.
