ABOUT

Vermont FEED's vision is to engage every student and community in a local food and farm culture that nurtures child health, cultivates viable farms, and builds vibrant communities. We do this by helping to grow robust farm to school programs, acting as a catalyst for rebuilding healthy food systems, and cultivating links between classrooms, cafeterias, communities, and local farms.

Started in 2000, Vermont FEED (Food Education Every Day) is a collaborative farm to school project of two organizations: the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) and Shelburne Farms Institute for Sustainable Schools. 

The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) is an association of farmers, gardeners, and consumers promoting an economically viable, ecologically sound, and socially just Vermont food system that benefits all living things.

Shelburne Farms is an education nonprofit on a mission to inspire and cultivate learning for a sustainable future through its programs, place, and products. They offer transformative learning experiences to help educators, students, and visitors create a more thriving world. Home to the Institute for Sustainable Schools, the historic campus is a 1,400-acre diversified farm located on the homelands of the Winooskik band of the Abenaki.

Farm to school is a comprehensive strategy that connects student learning and experiences in the Classroom, Cafeteria, and the Community. The goal is to help students establish a lifelong positive relationship with food while supporting a more just food system. The strategies used to achieve this shift are: serving healthy local food in schools, improving student nutrition, providing hands-on food systems based learning opportunities, and developing meaningful relationships between community partners, schools and students.

Vermont FEED provides training, coaching, professional learning and technical assistance to schools, food service staff, and farmers working to build strong farm to school programs. We also support a statewide network of champions working to bring farm to school to every community.
