Spring Child Nutrition Programs Field Trip: Champlain Valley Grain Center
Join NOFA-VT for a two-part immersive workshop series on Vermont’s emerging grains and flour value chain.
Meet Todd Hardie at the brand new Champlain Valley Grain Center, the purpose of which is to expand the grain growing and milling possibilities in Vermont by centralizing grain cleaning, storage, milling, marketing, sales, and distribution in one conveniently-located center in the Champlain Valley. The center is equipped with VT-made New American Stone Mills to mill on-site, as well as an on-site bakery where fresh bread will be for sale. The Grain Center intends to work with grain farmers across the state, including Granite Grains. We will be able to follow those VT-grown grains from farm to mill to flour to bread, and hear their plans for wholesale grain and flour sales for institutions like K-12 schools.
While this field trip is geared for school nutrition professionals, anyone interested in farm to school and local food systems are welcome to register.
Workshop Agenda:
- 12:30-1:30 pm: arrival at the center, BYO lunch (snacks provided)
- 1:30-3:00 pm: center tour
- 3:00-3:30 pm: wrap up circle & final Q&A
This course is eligible for 2 hours of USDA professional development credit for topic areas 1130 and 1320.
Directions: 144 Park Ln, Ferrisburgh, VT 05456. Parking: As you turn off of Rt. 22A onto Park Lane, there is a black building straight ahead. Go clockwise around the building and start to park on the east side of the building. Enter the building there, by the overhead door. There is more parking on the west side of the building that you will pass on the way in.
*Note: the two grain workshops (Granite Grains and Champlain Valley Grain Center) are intended as a series, but it’s not required to attend both. Todd Hardie and Tyler Murray will be at both workshops, so if you can only attend one, you’ll still have an opportunity to meet them both.
The field trip is part of the Vermont Agency of Education's 2026 Spring Child Nutrition Programs Field Trip Series hosted by NOFA-VT. All field trips are free to attend and provide professional development credits for attendees. Please make sure to register as space is limited. The field trips are made possible through the Agency of Education funding.
