Farm to School Procurement: Matchmaking 101

Kelly Erwin, Mass. Farm to School Project
Abbie Nelson, Vermont FEED

How do you figure out if farm to school procurement is going to be successful for THIS farm or THAT school? Through shared examples and scripted role-playing we will delve into the crucial factors and details of a farm to school purchasing transaction, including farm and distributor sales. We will have a few laughs as we focus on how to “close the deal”. A brief reference guide will be distributed at the end of the session.

Food Secure Communities: Addressing the root causes of hunger through innovative, hands-on education in the classroom, cafeteria and beyond!

Danielle Pipher, Vermont FEED
Abbie Nelson, Vermont FEED

Vermont FEED (Food Education Every Day) is a community-based approach to school food system change. Vermont FEED works with schools and communities statewide to raise awareness about healthy food, the vital role of Vermont farms and farmers in the school food system, and good nutrition. A joint project of three non-profits: Food Works at Two Rivers Center, NOFA-VT (Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont), and Shelburne Farms, Vermont FEED acts as a catalyst working to empower people to create sustainable food secure communities. In this workshop we will share specifics about various programs in Vermont that work to increase fair and equitable access to locally grown, healthy foods as well as providing details about our educational strategies that support increased self-sufficiency, awareness and sustainability in the classroom, cafeteria and community year round.
