Vermont school food facts & figures :
- 31 percent of Vermont’s school-aged children receive more than half of their daily nutritional intake from school meals.
- 26 percent of Vermont children are at risk of, or are, overweight.
- Less than one third of Vermont’s children eat the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables.
- $31 million is spent each year by Vermont school food programs.
- 329 schools are potential clients for the many Vermont farmers seeking local markets.
- The average school meal currently travels more than 1,500 miles from farm to table, creating an enormous storage and transportation related carbon footprint.
VT FEED works with teachers, food service personnel, farmers, school administration and staff, school partners and volunteers to improve school food and food education for all children
